The April 2020 Airports Authority report is sad and crazy at the same time, reflecting the airline's abuse following the Corona crisis with unprecedented numbers: 99.5% decrease in passenger traffic compared to April last year - from 2 million to 9,400 passengers in international operations.
In domestic flights the drop is 96% - from 38.3 thousand to 1,400 passengers. Israir alone operates flights on the line. The numbers reflect passenger traffic back and forth.
Aircraft traffic - for those who have become accustomed to quiet skies and bird chirping - dropped by 98 percent in April from 12.6 thousand to 231. Cargo activity, on the other hand, jumped 131% with 818 aircraft traffic, compared to about 350 aircraft in April last year.
At the beginning of the year, the passenger traffic in Ben Gurion Airport was 3.45 million passengers - in January alone they flew and landed 1.58 million passengers; in February the number dropped to 1.4 million; -471 thousand.
In April, as mentioned, fewer than 9,500 passengers passed through Ben Gurion Airport. Tourist entry has already been banned during this period, with only Israeli passport holders allowed to enter Israel, up to 14 days of isolation. According to a recent airline announcement, this situation is expected to remain until May 16th.
Benevol's activity schedule in April mainly included flights to return passengers from various destinations around the world and only a few commercial flights. Israir, which has not stopped its operations in both the cargo and passenger car segment, heads the table with a traffic of 2,846 passengers. United, which operates a daily flight from Newark, flew about 2,700 passengers.
This week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the commercial aviation movement will return in mid-June only to countries with low morbidity, but that it is precisely the corona-stricken New York flights.
