IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization conducted the board’s first-ever meeting in Israel

Posted on Feb 12, 2020 by Ifi Reporter

IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) conducted the board’s first-ever meeting in Israel—home to the largest number of high-tech companies and startups per capita in the world—and  highlight new IEEE SA programs in areas such as open source development.

“We see the Tel Aviv region as one of the most influential of the world’s international technology hubs; Israel has a unique culture of innovation,” said Robert S. Fish, president of the IEEE SA. “This makes Tel Aviv the ideal setting for our first Board of Governors meeting of the 2020s, given that we are building out innovative programs in a range of new areas. Our open source environment, for example, is already empowering leading developers who want to accelerate their projects. The value of open source in innovation around the world is undeniable, and because of that we are adding this new service to our proven, globally open, and transparent collaboration platform to support mission-based and market-driven open source projects.”

Open source as a method of collaboration in solving common problems is a proven method for sparking rapid innovation and creating freedom of choice. Advances in fields such as communications network programming, enterprise data analytics, natural language processing, computer vision, and algorithmic bias detection have relied on open source. Startups are especially heavily reliant on open source as a development model.

Later this year, IEEE SA will be launching IEEE Open Source, a comprehensive platform available globally to individuals and organizations to speed collaboration and foster technological innovation and excellence.
