The first satellite built by Elbit Systems was launched into space using an Indian missile. This is a tiny, tiny-weight satellite, built as part of a project initiated by the BIRD Foundation and designed to be part of a civilian nanotechnology constellation. The satellite is operated from a ground station established at the Elbit Systems site in Haifa.
NANOVA (satellite and project name), measuring 30X10X10 cm and weighing 5 kg, contains an ultra-high frequency communications charger and provides a direct satellite link to transmit information, voice and text messages. .
Through the El Op division in the streets, which were sold mainly to the Defense Ministry for the IDF spy satellite of the Ofek series, but also to other customers. Now Elbit is entering the construction of whole satellites - meanwhile, in the emerging field of small satellites.
For years, satellites in Israel were only built in the aerospace industry, in its space plant in Yehud, where, among others, the horizon satellites and Amos communications satellites, the Genesis spacecraft that crashed on the moon, and a number of nano satellites for the Technion, Ben-Gurion University and others.
"We are proud to begin operations in the field of nano-satellite constellations. We intend to continue investing in this emerging field, expanding sensing capabilities and potential applications," said Yoram Shmuly, chief executive officer of Elbit Systems' Aircraft Division.
