Egypt reported this evening (Tuesday) about an Israeli-Jewish businessman who was apparently murdered in the city of Alexandria in the north of the country. According to the reports in the local media, the murdered man's name is Ziv Kiefer. At the moment, it is not clear if the background to the incident is nationalist and the circumstances of the case are under investigation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is familiar with the report - and confirmed the details. According to them, the murdered man had a business in the country. They also emphasized that "the Israeli embassy in Cairo is in contact with the Egyptian authorities, who are investigating the circumstances of the case." The reports show that the incident took place today, at the hands of unknown persons. Kiefer is a Canadian-Jewish citizen who holds an Israeli passport.
A day after the surprise attack by Hamas in the settlements surrounding Gaza, two Israeli tourists were murdered and another tourist was moderately wounded in a shooting attack against a group of Israeli tourists in Alexandria. A policeman, who was apparently entrusted with the security of the Israeli tourist group, opened fire on them and also killed a local Egyptian citizen, who was guiding the group. Security officials told the Reuters news agency at the time that the policeman was arrested and handed over for questioning.
"This morning, during a tourist visit by a group of Israelis to Alexandria in Egypt, a local opened fire on them," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement at the time. "As a result, two Israeli citizens and the local Egyptian guide were murdered. In addition, there is an injured Israeli lying there in moderate condition. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Israeli Embassy in Cairo are working, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Prime Minister's Office and the IDF, with the Egyptian authorities in order to return the Israeli citizens to Israel as soon as possible."
