Nationwide High School Strike Declared in Israel Amidst Salary Dispute

Posted on Mar 27, 2024 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

The National Student and Youth Council, alongside parent leaders, issued a stern announcement on Wednesday, declaring a strike in all high schools across Israel starting Thursday. This drastic action follows the failure of negotiations between the teachers' organization and the Ministry of Finance to reach an agreement by the set deadline.

In their statement, the council and parent leaders warned that this strike represents just the initial step and could escalate into further labor actions across the country. The decision to strike comes against the backdrop of a prolonged impasse between the teachers' organization and the ministries of finance and education regarding salary agreements over the past two years.

Last week, the teachers' organization intensified its campaign for a fair salary agreement, implementing several sanctions that have already impacted school activities. These measures include refraining from grading assignments, limiting activities after 3:30 p.m., canceling parent meetings and training courses, and halting extracurricular trips and events. Additionally, there have been instances of temporary school closures during recent protests.

The frustration with the ongoing stalemate extends to the students themselves, who argue that the lack of resolution is significantly disrupting their education. In response to what they perceive as severe harm caused by the situation, high school students have mobilized to shut down schools nationwide.

As tensions escalate and negotiations remain deadlocked, the future of education in Israel hangs in the balance, with both teachers and students demanding swift and equitable resolutions to the ongoing dispute.
