The mattress company Resident is sold for a billion dollars to the American furniture company Ashley Home. Among the biggest beneficiaries of the transaction are the founders Ran Raska, Craig Schmeiser, and Eric Hutchinson and several institutional entities from Israel, led by Moore Investments, Fenix, Menorah, and Psagot. Most of the entities invested in the resident in fundraising of 130 million dollars led by the ION fund in 2021 at a value of approximately 700 million dollars.
Resident operates in the online trade of furniture and mattresses, which is estimated at 250 billion dollars a year. The company focuses on the mattress category in the US, which has an annual turnover of approximately 16.5 billion dollars. Online sales in the American furniture industry are 20-30%, of which the company occupies approximately 11%.
According to recent estimates, Resident ended 2023 with revenues of $900 million and an operating profit margin before taxes and depreciation (EBITDA) of 10%. In 2018, it was announced as the fastest-growing e-commerce company in the US by "Internet Retailer", a magazine that ranks all major online retailers in the US. According to sources in the online trade industry in Israel, Resident's revenues place it above all Israeli companies in this sector.
Resident owns four different mattress brands and a furniture and home products brand. These are sold through its online trade websites and in about 2,000 stores across the US, as part of its collaborations with furniture and mattress chains. The company's leading mattress brands are called Nectar and Dreamcloud, and are also sold in England.
Resident was established in 2016 in Israel by Craig Schmeiser, Ran Reska and Eric Hutchinson, who control and hold the majority of its shares. The latter two serve as joint CEOs and manage it from their place of residence in San Francisco. Schmeiser does not hold an active management position in the company. Its activity, which began in Israel, focuses on research and development, marketing and data, and today the company operates as an American parent company that owns the Israeli activity as a subsidiary.
The Israeli branch, located in Tel Aviv, employs about 26 people and is managed by Sharon Dagan, chief technology officer, and Gil Efrati, global marketing officer. The activity of the Israeli branch increased with the growth of the company, which is currently working to recruit additional technology and data workers. Resident also operates offices in England, Ukraine and India.
Ashley is considered the largest furniture company in North America and its parent company operates in 155 countries and employs 35,000 people.
