Wissotzky Green Tea Monopoly Announces Price Hikes Amidst Industry Uproar

Posted on Jan 18, 2024 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Wissotzky, a company dominating the green tea and herbal infusions market, has declared an impending price increase of approximately 8% on its magical garden and chai experience series, with specific variations such as the Shakshuka Zita and Zita olive series facing hikes of 9% and 6%-12%, respectively. The adjustment, set to take effect in March, is attributed to a notable surge in raw material, packaging, and production input costs over recent years.

Despite facing scrutiny, Wissotzky intends to implement a partial compensation strategy through the price update, sparing the green tea and black tea products, which have maintained their prices since 2012.

The decision comes amidst a backdrop of discussions in the Knesset's Economic Committee, where industry representatives were notably absent, except for a diplomatic presence. The committee focused on addressing the broader issue of rising prices in the consumer goods sector. Critics argued that current raw material prices are on a downward trend, raising questions about the timing and necessity of the proposed increases. Calls were made to expand the list of products under price control, and there were suggestions to expedite a bill penalizing those who disproportionately raise prices during times of conflict.

Several companies, including Shastowitz, Yakhin Beit Al-Hasita, and Soget, have recently announced price hikes during the ongoing war. Notably, Strauss also joined the fray yesterday by announcing a quarter of its product line would experience price increases.

The move by Vysotsky adds to the growing debate on fair pricing practices in the face of economic challenges, prompting further discussions within the industry and beyond.
