Minister Amichai Shikli Resigns - Sparks Government Trend of Ministry Closures
Posted on Jan 8, 2024 by Ifi Reporter
Three months after the outbreak of the war, Minister Amichai Shikli has announced his resignation from the position of Minister of Social Equality, a move seen as a response to growing criticism of wasteful government spending. This marks the first retirement from a government position following Gila Distel-Atbarian's resignation from the Ministry of Information. Shikli's departure will lead to the closure of the Ministry of Social Equality, with its responsibilities absorbed into the Prime Minister's Office.
While Shikli will retain his role as Minister of Diaspora, a position considered by some as unnecessary, he defended the decision, citing the current surge in anti-Semitic events globally. Shikli emphasized the importance of maintaining the ministry's focus on combating anti-Semitism, especially during challenging times for Diaspora Jewry.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Shikli stated that his resignation from the Ministry of Social Equality is driven by budgetary considerations, given the economic challenges ahead. He proposed adjustments in the government structure to address these challenges, with the aim of reducing additional costs. Shikli also expressed his intention to return to the Knesset, following his resignation under Norwegian law.
Government officials suggest that Shikli's move may set a trend, with each coalition partner expected to give up one unnecessary office, while Likud may relinquish two. Potential closures include the Ministry of Settlement, the Ministry of Heritage, and the Ministry of Jerusalem and Israel's Tradition. The Ministry for Regional Cooperation is also under consideration for closure.
Responding to Shikli's resignation, the Ministry for Social Equality asserted its continued commitment to marginalized minority populations in Israel. Former Minister of Social Equality, MK Merav Cohen, criticized the current government for emptying the ministry of its contents, splitting units, and transferring responsibilities to other offices.
As the government contemplates further restructuring, the fate of additional ministries remains uncertain. The move reflects a broader effort to address concerns of excessive government spending and streamline operations in the aftermath of the "Iron Swords" war.
