Government Unanimously Approves Postponement of Local Authority Elections by Four Weeks
Posted on Dec 31, 2023 by Ifi Reporter
In a unanimous decision, the government has sanctioned a four-week delay in the upcoming local authority elections, pushing the date from January 30, 2024, to February 27. The move was prompted by data provided by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), revealing the impracticality of releasing 688 servicemen, actively contesting elections in 144 municipalities, from reserve duty.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, addressing the cabinet meeting, highlighted the rarity of holding elections during wartime. Acknowledging the predetermined nature of these elections and a prior postponement, Netanyahu presented two options – end of January or end of February. He emphatically recommended the latter, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the participation of as many reserve personnel as possible, asserting it as a fundamental right.
Interior Minister Moshe Arbel, who adjusted his stance based on IDF data, underscored the necessity of determining election dates professionally to guarantee the voting rights of every Israeli resident. With 688 candidates still engaged in active duty, Arbel asserted the need for a postponement until the end of February. Concurrently, the High Court of Justice is expected to address petitions seeking further postponements beyond February 2024.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich lauded the government's decision, expressing concern about soldiers on the frontlines being unable to participate in the electoral process. He stressed the importance of avoiding election-related debates during such critical times, citing the stance as representative of numerous soldiers unwilling to forgo their right to vote and be elected.
Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir welcomed the decision as a crucial moral and value-driven choice, particularly benefiting reserve fighters in active combat zones. However, he suggested that a more extended postponement, even necessitating legislative changes, would have been appropriate.
The Local Government Center affirmed the significance of elections as an essential democratic process, vital for the continuous functioning of local governments. The center asserted its commitment to preparing for the rescheduled local authority elections on February 27.
