Consumer Confidence Plummets to New Lows Reflecting Economic Woes

latest Consumer Confidence Survey by the Central Bureau of Statistics paints a grim picture of the Israeli economy. Published on Monday, the survey indicates a notable deterioration in consumer confidence during November, reaching levels unseen since the initial lockdown in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Consumer Confidence Index, a key metric gauging public sentiment towards the economy, plummeted to a disheartening minus 29% in November. To put this in perspective, the index stood at minus 24% in October and minus 18% in September. A score of 100% reflects complete confidence, while minus 100% signifies complete lack of confidence.
The survey, aimed at predicting public sentiment, focuses on four crucial parameters, all of which are currently registering negative trends. Particularly alarming is the sharp decline in respondents' intentions to make significant purchases in the coming year, with this index dropping to a concerning minus 40%, compared to minus 30% in October.
Additional parameters contributing to the overall index also reveal a bleak outlook. The public's expectations for the future of the economy worsened, reaching minus 45% in November, compared to minus 42% in the previous month. Assessing the change in household economic situations over the past year, the balance stands at a worrisome minus 22%. Looking ahead to the next year, expectations remain negative at minus 11%.
As economic uncertainties loom, these figures suggest a growing lack of confidence among consumers, underscoring the challenges faced by the Israeli economy. The question now is how policymakers and businesses will respond to address and alleviate these concerns among the public.
