Rehabilitation of Gaza Settlements: A Collaborative Effort Amidst Controversy
Posted on Oct 19, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski
Director of Planning has initiated the formation of a dedicated team tasked with planning the rehabilitation of settlements in the Gaza region. This crucial endeavor will be overseen by "Haval Hatokuma," led by the seasoned Moshe Adri. The Directorate's operations fall under the jurisdiction of the Special Ministerial Committee for Economy and Society, presided over by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.
Officials within the Planning Directorate disclosed yesterday that this collaborative team is expected to include representatives from various government ministries, as well as members representing the interests of the local residents and regional councils in the Otef area. The establishment of such a team underscores a commitment to ensure the rehabilitation process respects the residents' needs and aspirations.
"A key principle we're upholding is that any action must be carried out in close cooperation with the inhabitants of the kibbutzim and moshavim in the Gaza Strip and align with their aspirations," stressed a senior official from the Planning Directorate.
However, recent reports have stirred controversy within the community, as government officials consider the integration of Torah nuclei and settlement movements in the rehabilitation efforts. Residents' opposition to this idea has been palpable, highlighting the delicate balance that needs to be maintained between various stakeholders.
Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that a specialized planning committee would be established to approve the rehabilitation plans. Interestingly, the Planning Directorate appears to be unaware of this proposed committee, indicating potential complexities in the decision-making process.
As the rehabilitation of settlements around Gaza takes center stage, it remains to be seen how these diverse interests and concerns will be harmonized to achieve a successful outcome. The forthcoming weeks will likely see more discussions and deliberations to shape the future of this vital endeavor.
