Israel's Ministry of Finance Addresses Economic Impact of Gaza Conflict

Posted on Oct 9, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

In the midst of Israel's intensive military campaign in the Gaza Strip, the Ministry of Finance held a crucial situation assessment discussion on Monday, spearheaded by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Senior Treasury officials have underscored that the security situation is likely to exert significant consequences on the nation's economy. Their assessment, they say, is being conducted meticulously and professionally, given the high level of uncertainty surrounding the evolving events and their nature.

Senior finance officials have emphasized that the Ministry is currently channeling all its efforts towards supporting the ongoing war and the national endeavor. This includes providing crucial assistance and continuous response to the budgetary requirements of the operational bodies, ensuring they can operate smoothly within their allocated budgets during the conflict. This is made possible, in part, through substantial aid received by Israel from the United States.

According to sources within the Treasury, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the security establishment, the police, and the rescue forces have been granted the necessary financial flexibility to respond to operational needs without budgetary constraints. The direct costs associated with combat will be assessed at a later stage, and financial responses will be formulated accordingly. Compensation for civilian damages will be funded through the property tax fund. The Treasury has also announced the establishment of a dedicated hotline for individuals directly affected by the conflict.

In alignment with the directives of the Finance Minister, and in coordination with CEO Shlomi Heisler and Budget Commissioner Yogev Gerdos, a budgetary framework has been prepared to address the ongoing civilian repercussions of the conflict. The Ministry of Finance is actively monitoring the evolving needs of various government ministries and enabling necessary financial support accordingly. As Israel's involvement in Gaza expands with ground operations and the fronts multiply, the expectation is that the budgetary framework will also need to expand to meet these evolving challenges.
