Netanyahu and Regev Announce Ambitious "Plan to Connect Israel in a Railroad Network"

Posted on Jul 30, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

In a groundbreaking move, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Transport Minister Miri Regev unveiled the "Plan to Connect Israel in a Railroad Network" today, aimed at revolutionizing the country's rail infrastructure and establishing a rail line connecting Eilat to Kiryat Shmona by 2040. The ambitious plan, estimated to cost approximately NIS 150 billion, is set to be budgeted in several phases.

Minister Regev's significant achievement lies in securing funds for the project, despite facing opposition from the Ministry of Finance. The initial budget for the project will see NIS 200 million coming from the Ministry of Transport's budget, with an additional NIS 2.4 billion to be drawn from the Israel Railways' five-year plan budget.

A key point of contention is how the remaining projects under the plan will be financed. The proposed projects include a rail line to Kiryat Shmona, a high-speed rail line from Haifa to Be'er Sheva, the Menasha rail line, and a rail connection between Beer Sheva and Jerusalem. Further details on milestones and budget allocations are yet to be finalized.

Minister Regev successfully swayed Minister of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, who now supports the train to Eilat, despite the Treasury's historical opposition citing economic viability concerns. On the environmental front, the plan faces opposition from various environmental organizations, including the Society for the Protection of Nature, who argue that it will lead to significant environmental damage.

The announcement marks a milestone in Israel's transportation infrastructure development, promising improved connectivity and faster travel options for citizens and visitors alike. However, the project's feasibility and environmental impact will continue to be subjects of debate in the cabinet meeting where the plan will be discussed.
