Protests Erupt Across Israel Over Legal Revolution and Alleged Hate Crimes

Posted on Jul 27, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Protests erupted in several locations across the country on Thursday evening, including the Kaplan intersection in Tel Aviv, where the main demonstration took place. The protests came after a two-day lull and in response to the recent approval of a law that canceled the cause of reasonableness three days ago in the Knesset plenum.

In anticipation of the main protest at Kaplan, the police were well-prepared, stationing officers, fences, and barricades near every loophole in the Ayalon lanes. A significant number of young people attempted to breach the Ayalon lanes, with mounted police closely following them.

The police made their stance clear before the demonstration, stating that they would not tolerate damage to police officers, infrastructure, or symbols of the government. They vowed to act with zero tolerance towards any lawbreakers.

The Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, praised the HSM commander, Yair Hanuna, who had faced allegations of violence against protesters throughout the week, calling him an "outstanding officer" who acted with determination. Ben Gvir also expressed his full support for the police in their efforts to maintain public order and prevent any disruption caused by the protesters' blockades.

In addition to the main protest at Kaplan, hundreds of people from the gay community also demonstrated on the streets. The focal point of their protest was a case of alleged violence against Adi Davidov, a young resident who belongs to the LGBT community. According to claims, Davidov was attacked by a group of people while standing outside a shopping mall wearing makeup and pink clothing. The demonstrators expressed their solidarity by waving pride flags and Israeli flags, and they condemned what they referred to as "homophobia in the corridors of the government."

The Ra'anana intersection also saw demonstrations, with the police setting up fences to restrict access to the road. However, protesters managed to block the eastern intersection to the Ra'anana intersection despite these measures.
