compromise: Meta will pay four million shekels to a fund for class actions

Posted on Jul 9, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

The Central District Court approved a compromise in which it was agreed that the company Meta (Facebook) will pay four million shekels to a fund for class actions, with the amount helping to promote privacy-related activities such as privacy education, information on privacy and the development of technologies that will preserve privacy, with an emphasis on minors, the elderly and the incapacitated.
The settlement was reached as part of a request for approval of a class action lawsuit filed in 2014, which sought to address Meta's practices in connection with private messages on Facebook. The applicant claimed, among other things, against the social network that it previously activated a monitoring mechanism for private messages and misused them. Among other things, it is claimed that Facebook shared the information and links from the private messages with third parties.
On the other hand, Facebook claimed that the approval request should be removed outright. She also claimed that she did not monitor or read the private messages of the users.
It should be emphasized that as part of the settlement, Meta does not admit the claims against it and that Facebook stated that the alleged practices that are the subject of the lawsuit had completely stopped by June 2015.
