Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich will extend the term of the Director of the Tax Authority Eran Yaakov by half a year to a year. Yaakov was supposed to finish his five-year term on March 18 of this year, and for the most part, the term of a senior official in the Ministry of Finance is not extended beyond five years. However, the Minister of Finance summoned the Director of the Tax Authority to him and the two agreed, as stated, that his tenure would be extended.
About 20 accountants, tax consultants and senior economists have already announced that they intend to run for the key position in the Ministry of Finance, which is responsible for all aspects of the state's revenues. The position of Director of the Tax Authority is one of the only positions in the Ministry of Finance that requires the establishment of a search committee and presentation of a number of preferred candidates to the Minister of Finance. As is known, it has not yet been determined whether the extension will be for six months or a full year.
A few days ago, Minister Smotrich also decided to extend the tenure of the Chief Economist at the Ministry of Finance, Shira Greenberg, by six months, after her contract expired last Saturday.
It was also learned that today the Minister of Finance extended the temporary tenure of Amit Gal, Acting Commissioner of the Capital Market, Moshe Barkat, for an additional period of three months by the hour. Barkat resigned from his position three months ago, before the end of his contract.
The extension of the tenure of senior finance officials is intended to assist in the preparation of the biennial state budget, for the years 2023-24, and the extended Law of Arrangements, when a problem would arise if senior officials appointed now would have to plan the sections of the budget and the Law of Arrangements only a few weeks after assuming key positions in the Ministry of Finance.
