MK Moshe Gafni was elected as the chairman of the temporary Finance Committee

Posted on Nov 21, 2022 by Ifi Reporter

The legendary chairman from the past decade of the most powerful committee in the Knesset, the Finance Committee, is returning to his post. MK Moshe Gafni was elected Monday as the chairman of the temporary Finance Committee, where its members approved the recommendation of the regulatory committee to appoint him to the position.
Gafni has served with two short breaks as head of the committee since 2009, when Benjamin Netanyahu returned to the prime ministership, and is considered very knowledgeable in all budget issues and most of the many economic issues that are on the committee's table. In the past, his election as head of the committee was always supported by the representatives of the opposition, who hold him in high esteem, even in times of controversy.
The speaker of the temporary committee, MK Moshe Gafni, noted that "the speaker of the Knesset was a member of the committee, he was in the opposition and I was in the coalition, at the same time most of the votes in the committee were unanimous, we did things, we improved laws, the members from both sides were in this matter. I am announcing in advance, I heard that the governor intends to raise the interest rate in the economy, which means that the mortgage holders will pay more money, I intend to hold a discussion on this. I also want to bring up the increase in milk prices for discussion. There will be no finance minister in the State of Israel who will tell me not to hold discussions on the critical social issues that belong to everyone. We need here in the committee to know that this is a different place from other places, here the opposition and the coalition work together, and do what is best for the State of Israel. Now we will have to transfer transfers and surpluses that have been concentrated in an unimaginable amount, I pray to God to guide me on the right path, especially in these difficult days, I accept the burden of the chairman of the committee, as the one who represents everyone. I thank you for the support."
The outgoing Chairman of the Finance Committee, Alex Kushnir (Israel Beitenu), who about a week ago called Gafni to sit down with him for an arranged meeting, said: "I want to wish my replacement as MK Gafni that he will keep his promise and represent everyone. The Finance Committee should be free of politics and interests."
The chairman of the organizing committee, MK Yoav Kish, said at the hearing that "I am very excited to be here, I am happy for two reasons: one, I really like Rabbi Gafni and I was a member of his committees for many years, he did an excellent job and I am sure that it will be the same In the 25th Knesset. I can tell you that there was also a chairman of a committee here in the previous term who tried to work, but ran into a finance minister with a clear agenda to harm a certain sector. I hope that in the next government it will change completely. I want to say to the members of the opposition that if you vote against it, it is a precedent that has not happened before, in my opinion
The Speaker of the Knesset, MK Miki Levy, said: "MK Gafni, the chairman of the temporary committee, which is likely to be permanent as well, over the years you have left your mark on this committee. For the new members of the Knesset - this is the most important committee, which determines the All the economic conduct of the State of Israel, also as a subcommittee in the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee. I sat on this committee for a total of 10 years, here they influence and here there is the fingerprint, in the end they reach a compromise for the benefit of the State of Israel and its citizens. I wish you success in your old position, I have no doubt that you will continue leave your mark on the committee. There are many issues that you transcend political affiliation for the benefit of the State of Israel and its citizens, good luck MK Gafni, your success is our success."
