The Committee for Preferred Housing Complexes approved for deposit of the "Benyamin Complex" urban renewal plan in the Givat Zion neighborhood in southeast Ashkelon. The plan is on a total area of 57 dunams and is bordered to the north by Yehudit Street, to the south and west by Benjamin Street, and to the east by agricultural areas.
The plan promoted by the Ashkelon Municipality and the Governmental Authority for Urban Renewal includes approximately 927 housing units that will be built in 27-9 story residential buildings. Out of all the housing units, about 195 were allocated for small apartments. Today there are 132 housing units in the complex that will be built in railway buildings and 3-4 story buildings that will be renovated for the new project.
In addition to the housing units, the proposed planning increases the scope of the areas for public needs while optimizing their use. And it includes an addition of 4,350 square meters for public buildings, 2,000 square meters for clinics and offices, and 9 dunams of open spaces.
The planner of the Committee for Preferred Housing Complexes, Ed. Sigi Barry: "This is one of the 7 plans that the HTML is establishing in the city of Ashkelon, thus proving that Ashkelon knows how to produce new construction alongside the urban renewal of the existing built structure. The plan allows for a real renewal of Binyamin Street and its surroundings and puts the resident at the center. The new complex is of the highest quality, which includes an urban square with commerce and gardens for play and leisure that will be a community meeting place for Ashkelon's old and new residents alike."
