The recently ended April continues the positive trend recorded in the diamond industry over the past year and a half and marks a successful first trio for the industry in 2022, with gains in all four major trading categories.
In the monthly summary published today by the Ministry of Economy and Industry's Diamond and Dual Export Control Administration, it appears that in the first four months of 2022, net imports of rough diamonds to Israel amounted to about $ 615 million, a moderate increase of about 3.5% compared to the period The equivalent last year (in April there was an increase of about 2.5% compared to April 2021). Net exports of rough diamonds during that period amounted to about $ 640 million, an increase of about 22.5% compared to the first quarter in 2021 (when in April there was actually a decrease of about 15% compared to April last year).
Net polished diamond imports in the first quarter of the year amounted to about $ 1.14 billion, an increase of about 34% compared to the corresponding quarter in 2021 (when in April there was actually a decrease of about 2% compared to April last year) while net polished diamond exports, Which stood at a total of about $ 1.75 billion, there was an increase of about 52% compared to the corresponding quarter in 2021 (when in April 2022 there was an increase of about 38% compared to April last year).
Last month, rough diamond exports to the United Arab Emirates totaled about $ 24 million, which is about 16% of Israel's total rough diamond exports in April. This month, roughly $ 8.5 million worth of rough diamonds will be imported from Israel from the United Arab Emirates, which is about 7% of the total rough diamonds imported to Israel in April.
"Last April was a positive month, and continues the trend, more moderately, probably due to the war between Russia, which is a diamond trade center for Ukraine and the effects of sanctions," said Ophir Gur, the diamond inspector at the Ministry of Economy and Industry.
