Gilat Satellites has won a contract with one of the largest cellular operators in Asia

Posted on Jan 3, 2022 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Gilat Satellites, which develops and manufactures products and systems for broadband satellite communications, has won a contract with one of the largest cellular operators in the world. The cellular operator that serves hundreds of millions of subscribers in Asia will implement Gilat's satellite transmission technology in the 4th generation network.
The cellular operator will implement Gilat's SkyEdge system and Capricorn outdoor terminals, which will enable improved voice and data communication for the subscriber. Gilat's solutions will be deployed in the first quarter of 2022. Michal Aharonov, VP of Commercial Operations at Gilat, noted that the company has penetrated a market with significant potential and estimates that following the current deal, additional deals will be signed with the major cellular operator and other cellular companies around 2022.
Gilat's current deal, managed by Adi Tzafdia, was signed less than two months after the company received an order from the largest mobile transmission network in Africa AMN - Africa Mobile Networks - for mobile transmission terminals to serve first-class communications companies. AMN will use the terminals to expand its coverage to two more countries, and it will set up base stations for cellular networks designed to serve remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa where service is not yet available.
Base stations help additional cellular communications companies add new users without investing in infrastructure, and generate additional low-margin revenue. The November 2021 contract with AMN is an extension of an initial agreement from August 2020, under which Gilat provided terminals to AMN to extend mobile retirement to ten African countries. AMN establishes, operates and maintains a cellular communications infrastructure and provides network as a service to leading communications companies.
