Economy Minister Orna Barbibai has chosen Michal Cohen as the competition commissioner - and now the appointment will be brought to the government's approval. Cohen has served as acting supervisor of the competition since last August, following the retirement of former supervisor Michal Halperin.
The second candidate whose nomination committee for the Minister of Economy was transferred yesterday was Oren Rugby, PhD in economics and chief economist at the Competition Authority since 2020.
According to the search committee, the committee convened for five hearings, in which 14 candidates who reached the final stage of in-depth interviews and background checks appeared before it. The committee was headed by Ron Malka, Director General of the Ministry of Economy, and included members of the Civil Service Commission, Hagit Reshef, Deputy Attorney General Meir Levin, retired Judge Iris Soroker and Adv. Dror Strum.
Cohen has been holding legal positions in the Competition Authority since 2006. She served as Deputy Attorney General (Criminal), Senior Deputy Attorney General (Civil), Legal Adviser, and from August 2021 served as Acting Commissioner for the Competition.
Minister Barbibai: "I expect that the Authority will increase supervision and enforcement as a leading professional in the field of competition, and will act as an independent and proactive body in any case of fear of harm to competition and the consumer. Adv. Michal Cohen has the full skills to head the authority. Headed by the Director General of the Ministry of Economy and Industry, Dr. Ron Malka.
