The Ministry of Finance is for the first time having a large-scale war game designed to simulate an international financial cyber attack. The multi-participant exercise has been planned at the Ministry of Finance over the past year together with partners from finance ministries around the world and global financial organizations.
The exercise was conducted on a virtual platform, following the corona's limitations, and took place under the leadership of an emergency cyber and security system in the Israeli Ministry of Finance, and with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the first time an international war game has been held in the face of extreme cyber scenarios affecting the global financial system.
The financial discourse was moderated by Yael Andoren, former Director General of the Ministry of Finance, and the simulation was attended by representatives from the United States, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Thailand, the International Monetary Fund, the BIS, and the World Bank.
The chief economist at the Ministry of Finance, Shira Greenberg, who headed the Israeli team, said that "the unique and groundbreaking exercise that took place, flooded the importance of coordinated global action by governments together with central banks in the face of cyber threats."
The head of the Ministry of Finance's Cyber Emergency and Security Division, Yoni Moore, who led the exercise, added that "the simulation made it clear to us that coordination between economic leaders from around the world, trust between them and a willingness to boldly look at scenarios and gaps in existing tools are key to success."
