Israeli billionaire Teddy Sagi recently fled an assassination attempt in Cyprus and left the country. Last week, the media on the neighboring island reported the arrest of a hired killer who planned to eliminate Israeli businessmen. This is an Azerbaijani citizen who was arrested and in possession of a gun and a silencer.
It is not known what the security aspect of the incident is, but for hours the military censors banned the publication of Sagi's identity. After pressure from the media, the publication was finally approved. The Teddy Sagi group said in response that "this is an Iranian terrorist incident."
According to a report on the Philenews website, in which local police officials were quoted, the 38-year-old Azeri carried a Russian passport with him. He was arrested on Monday afternoon last week, shortly after crossing the border crossing in the northern Nicosia capital from the Cypriot-Turkish authorities into its southern part, the one controlled by the Cypriot-Greek government recognized by the international community.
His rental car, police said, found a gun, bullets and a silencer. According to the report, he is suspected of a crime of planning a crime - execution of a "liquidation contract". Another local website, Alpha News, claims that the Cypriot police suspect that the man is a member of the Russian mafia, and that he planned to carry out five "liquidation contracts" in total. The suspect was arrested at the end of a follow-up by the police, which is now also conducting a manhunt for his possible accomplices - although it is possible that these have already disappeared following his arrest, or that some of them are in northern Cyprus.
