More than 19,000 women and men aged 67 and over who received a special "adjustment grant", up to the amount of NIS 4,000 per month, after being taken on unpaid leave and not yet returning to work, as a replacement for unemployment benefits - will stop receiving the grant starting this weekend. According to the data, some senior citizens may fall below the poverty line due to the cessation of payment, even if they start receiving an old-age pension in October.
With the decision to stop paying unemployment benefits to those staying in the IDF starting July 1 (except for those aged 45 and over), the government decided, after pressure from organizations and social activists, to continue paying the special grant before the law for three months, until the end of September. Was a substitute for unemployment benefits that cannot be paid to those aged 67 and over.
The “adaptation grant” has been paid since July 2021 when it is gradually truncated monthly. Initially 90% of the grant was paid, in August 80% and in September 70%. This is to encourage 67-year-olds to return to work, if possible.
September 30 will take place this coming Thursday, and an investigation by Ynet tonight (Tuesday) shows that there is no intention in the Ministry of Finance to continue paying the monthly grant to those aged 67 and over. This is despite the fact that the National Insurance Institute believes that it should continue to be paid in order to prevent serious harm to the elderly who continued to work and were taken on unpaid leave due to the corona crisis.
The National Insurance data show that the special support decided on in the summer of 2020 was given to about 50,000 senior citizens aged 67 and over who were expelled to the IDF (exactly 49,942) and its cost to the state treasury amounted to NIS 1.671 billion by the end of August. NIS 1.7 billion by the end of the payment this week.
In 2020, 47,720 different senior citizens received the grant, and in 2021, their number amounted to 32,118,000 people aged 67 and over. In August, 9,837 men and 9,376 women were still eligible for the special grant, with a total of 19,213 aged 67 and over, who would lose the grant on 1 October.
It should be noted that in the coming month they will stop receiving unemployment benefits for tens of thousands of people aged 45 and over, until the age of 67, after the period of their entitlement to receive them ends.
The calculation is made according to the number of months in which the unemployed persons aged 45 and over received unemployment benefits until the end of June - divided into two. That is, anyone who was entitled to six months of unemployment - about 180 days - during the period of the Great Corona Law, is now entitled to receive additional unemployment benefits for only 90 working days, which will end soon.
