A study by VpnMentor: two criminal organizations designed to carry out phishing operations in Israel

Posted on Sep 14, 2021 by Ifi Reporter

A study by vpnMentor, led by Noam Rotem, the company's head of cyber research and hacker Ethi, found two criminal organizations designed to carry out phishing operations in Israel and France, among others.
According to the main points of the report, these are two separate groups of hackers who took advantage of a phishing scheme - an attack tool used to set up fake websites and send malicious SMS messages - to impersonate parties such as a global logistics company and steal credit information.
The source of the findings is in identifying the same phishing kit that led investigators to access an online database where the names of the victims were stored. The database included about 4,400 names, most of them Israelis, who clicked on the malicious link sent to them in the message and filled in the credit information on the fake website.
Phishing kits are a suite of apps that can be purchased or downloaded from forums in Darknet. They usually include an application for setting up fake websites, an official email template or text messages that can be sent to victims to persuade them to go to the site above and if you pay a little more also lists of e-mail articles or a phone number that can be attacked. In addition, some of these packages also include means to automate the entire process. This means that no extraordinary technical knowledge is required to run such a phishing operation.
Most of the victims are from Israel
This is why the researchers discovered the operation, according to what they found, the database they identified was not secure and the hackers did not seem to be skilled enough to hide it effectively. Hence the researchers' assessment that these are not professional hackers but amateurs or criminals with no background in cyber-attacks. In the first scam found, some of the victims were also in Brazil, the United States, Saudi Arabia and a large part of European countries. However, as mentioned, the majority were from Israel.
