A cyber attack took place in the afternoon (Sunday) at Bar Ilan University. An internal email sent by the computer unit at the institution described the case as follows: "At the moment, there is a severe cyber attack on Bar Ilan University, which is manifested in the deletion and encryption of information ...". This means that the event looks like a ransomware virus or Wiper - an attack designed to delete information. It is also written: "The directive at the moment is to turn off the computers that are connected to the network until further instructions."
The management of Bar-Ilan University stated that the incident is recognized and handled by specialized companies: "A small number of computer stations in the Bar-Ilan University research network experienced a point-by-point cyber incident. "From what we know at the moment, the incident is spotty. The work and studies at the university continue to proceed as usual."
The academic sector is one of the most attacked in Israel, also due to the information and research it has, and it was also among the goals of the Chinese campaign on Israel that was recently exposed.
