31% of Israelis are still unable to carry out banking operations via the Internet and without a representative. This is according to data from the Social Survey on Online Trading and Banking for 2020, published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
The data also show that only 63% of Israeli citizens indicate that they are indeed able to use digital banking services and that another 6% did not know how to respond. Another gap that arises in this context is between Jews and Arabs, with only 47% in the Arab sector indicating that they are able to use these services compared to 67% of Jews.
By age, the differences between young people and adults in the field are noticeable: 21% of those aged 20-44 are unable to use the services, compared with 47% of those aged 74-65 and 65% of those aged 75 and over. According to the CBS, these data pose a significant challenge to the banks, which seek to reduce the physical services in the branches.
The age gap is also reflected in the percentage of users of money transfer applications online: 50% of people aged 20-44 and 13% of those aged 65 and over use the net to transfer money. However, the gap between Jews and Arabs and between secular and ultra-Orthodox is very large: 46% of Jews use the online option to transfer money compared to only 4% of Arabs and 58% of secular people transfer money online compared to only 10% of ultra-Orthodox.
At the same time, it seems that those who do succeed in using the digital services are usually also satisfied with them: 85% of Israelis aged 44-20 and 78% of those aged 65 and over who use the services indicate that they are satisfied with them. Of the nine major cities (Netanya, Rishon Lezion, Ashdod, Beer Sheva, Jerusalem, Petah Tikva, Bnei Brak, Tel Aviv-Yafo and Haifa), the rate of satisfaction with digital banking services ranges from 90% of Haifa residents to 75% of Netanya residents.
Is digital banking a real alternative? 51% of those who use digital banking services on the Internet believe that digital services can not replace the services in the branch, compared to 47% who believe that this is possible.
According to the survey, 96% of those who used Internet banking services did so to monitor account status, 76% made transfers and payments (79% Jews and 53% Arabs), 38% deposited checks and 34% deposited or withdrew a deposit ( 35% Jews and 24% Arabs). 5% open an account online.
Additional data emerging from the CBS survey deal with Internet commerce. According to the CBS, 90% of Israelis "use the Internet more than you do due to the social distance imposed on society following the Corona plague." 45% used the Internet to buy products and services and 7.5% sold online. Women and men shop online at a similar rate (45% and 46%); However, the proportion of Jews who buy is much higher than the proportion of Arabs (51% and 17%, respectively).
By gender, 38% of men and 17% of women buy computer equipment and electronics; 31% of men and 18% of women buy home appliances; About a quarter (25%) of men buy insurance products online, compared to 15% of women; 69% of women buy clothes, footwear and fashion accessories online, compared to 47% of men and 36% of them buy cosmetics and pharma, compared to 18% of men.
67% of Arabs and 58% of Jews who shop online, buy clothing, footwear and fashion products. 56% of Jews and 19% of Arabs buy food online. Of the nine major cities, 71% of Petah Tikva residents, 70% of Tel Aviv-Yafo residents and 39% of Jerusalem residents (42% of Jews) purchase food products online. The leading city in the rate of clothing purchases, footwear and fashion accessories through the Internet, is Netanya with 67%.
