, Israel's leading academic institution in the field of technology, The Technionwas ejected from the rankings of the world's 100 most innovative universities, published by Reuters on Thursday. Last year the Technion was 89 and two years ago at 59. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv University remained in the ranking. But while Hebrew increased three places from 82 to 79 (in 2016 it was only 94th), Tel Aviv dropped three places from 89 in 2016 and 2017 to 91th place.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem recorded between 280 and 201 patents, of which 31% had already been approved. The university claims its patents are responsible for products worth $ 2 billion a year. Tel Aviv University recorded 266 patents, of which 46% were approved.
The Reuters ranking does not refer to the level of research in universities in general as other rankings, but ranks them according to the innovation of scientific research, the invention of new technologies and the empowerment of markets and industries. It refers only to empirical data such as the amount of patents registered by each university. This is in contrast to other rankings based on surveys among academics.
The ranking leads to the fourth year at Stanford University in the US followed by MIT and the number of American institutions in the ranking stands at 46. Germany and Japan have 9 universities each. China has only two institutions, such as Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands. In all, there are institutions from only 14 countries.
