The company did not provide a schedule for the launch, the location of the facility or the size of the investment, but it is a significant investment in the amount of more than NIS 1 billion and in a process that can take up to two years. Establishing a local cloud infrastructure for the Israeli consumer and the developer community will enable the receipt of various Google services at a lower delay.
As a result, Google's global cloud infrastructure network expands to 26 locations around the world. The establishment of the data center in Israel comes against the background of the company winning the Nimbus tender, the largest government cloud tender. Google is the third giant to officially announce the establishment of a cloud infrastructure in Israel. It was preceded by Oracle, which will operate its facility in Jerusalem in the summer of 2021, and in early 2022 a Microsoft cloud will be launched in Israel. A similar announcement is also expected from Amazon in the near future - it also won the Nimbus tender and is therefore committed to establishing an Israeli facility. In fact, its sites in Israel are already under construction and it will be hosted by three Compass-Azrieli facilities.
