Google is opening in Israel a third R&D center and will hire hundreds of employees

Posted on Mar 24, 2021 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

A month after he unexpectedly retired from Intel, Uri Frank is appointed vice president of engineering and design of server chips at Google (VP of Engineering for server chip design). Frank, according to Google, will set up an international team that will operate in Israel in the field of chip development, and will recruit hundreds of employees for this purpose.
Google has R&D centers in Haifa and Tel Aviv, led by Yossi Matias, which currently has 1,600 employees. The new development center will be Google's first in Israel to deal with hardware development.
The search giant also said that the field of computing in Google is at an important turning point from working with a motherboard for "on-chip" systems (SoC) designs in which the same chip performs multiple functions, or on several chips within a single package.
The company launched in 2015 the Tensor Processing (TPU) unit that assisted services like real-time voice search, image object recognition and interactive language translation. In 2018, the company launched video processing units (VPUs) to enable video distribution in a variety of formats. In 2019, OpenTitan was launched, a secure open source chip design project. In addition, the company has over the years developed hardware solutions that include drives, network switches and network interface cards, usually in collaboration with external partners.
