"Israeli spyware of the Israeli NSO was used to track dozens of journalists on Al Jazeera"

Posted on Dec 20, 2020 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

The Israeli spyware of the Israeli NSO was used to track dozens of journalists on Al Jazeera and the London Al Araby channel. This is what a new report by the Citizens' Love Institute at the University of Toronto reveals.
The investigation also revealed evidence that NSO has found a way to infiltrate iPhones with its spyware, Pegasus, without the need for active user action but by exploiting weaknesses in Apple's cloud infrastructure. Exploitation of a loophole with a similar principle in WhatsApp has previously led to Facebook's lawsuit against the Israeli company.
"If there is an unregulated industry, there are companies that will sell technology to countries that will use it to advance their agendas, which include attacking critics and journalists," Dr. Bill Marzak, a researcher at the University of California at Berkeley and a senior fellow at Citizen Love, told Calcalist. The report, along with John Scott-Rylton, Nora Algizawi, Sienna Anstis and Ron Dibert.
According to the report, NSO's Pegasus software was used to attack 36 journalists, producers, presenters and executives in Al Jazeera, the Qatari news channel considered the most popular in the Arab world. A journalist was also tracked on an Al-Arab channel, which also has links to Qatar. The attacks took place in July. And last August, made possible by exploiting a vulnerability in Apple systems called Kismet that allows the spyware to be implanted without any action on the part of the user, as opposed to the familiar method of inserting a Pegasus, which requires the user to click on an infected link to infect the spyware.
