Work accident in Ashdod: Two workers were killed in an explosion at a metal recycling plant in the northern industrial area of the city. Two other workers at the plant were injured - one moderately and the other lightly. According to initial estimates, it was an explosion of two gas cylinders. Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident. The director of emergency care at Assuta Hospital in Ashdod, Dr. Debra West, told Ynet that the condition of the moderately injured person is defined as stable and his life is not in danger.
The investigation of the incident revealed that the two workers killed in the blast - a resident of the territories and a citizen of Turkey - were engaged in metal cutting using a "burner" device.
MDA medics and paramedics who were called to the scene determined the deaths of the two workers who were killed at the end of the resuscitation operations and evacuated one of the workers to Assuta Hospital in the city suffering from limb injuries. The injured person was treated lightly and did not need to be evacuated.
Ing Hezi Schwartzman, head of the director of occupational safety at the Ministry of Labor and chief labor inspector, said that "this is a deadly incident. The inspectors of the directorate are with the Israeli police and emergency services. The reasons for the explosion will be fully investigated."
Advocate Israel Asel, the legal advisor of the Forum for the Prevention of Work Accidents, stated: "Experience shows that accidents in which an explosion is caused occur mainly in the manufacturing industry, and result from non-compliance with work safety regulations while working in an explosive environment and lack of instruction and warning of workers."
Earlier this year, four people were seriously injured in a gas explosion at a tanker repair garage in the northern city of Tamra. The four suffered severe burns and were rushed by MDA to Rambam Hospital in Haifa. The blast caused heavy damage to the site, and nearby buildings were also damaged. The fire was extinguished after about three hours.
