Prof. Nachman Ash will replace Prof. Roni Gamzo as the corona projector

Posted on Oct 27, 2020 by Ifi Reporter

Prof. Nachman Ash, who until recently was the head of the health division at Maccabi, will replace Prof. Roni Gamzo as the corona projector, or in his official title: head of Magen Israel. This is what the Prime Minister and the Minister of Health, Netanyahu and Edelstein, decided. Ash will start overlapping with Gamzo as early as Wednesday. Ash served from 2007 to 2011 as Chief Medical Officer, and served in his role in Operation Cast Lead, among others.
Ash's appointment, 59, has been "brewing" in recent weeks and many consultations have taken place. Ash, who for the past six years has been the head of Maccabi's health division, is almost unrecognized by the general public, but within the health system he is a well-known, well-liked and professionally valued figure.
Ash is embarking on such a complex campaign to manage the epidemic and will have to deal with many factors and pressures that have not been on his agenda in the past, led by political pressures from various directions - along with the expectation of maintaining professionalism. As Gamzo quickly learned, the declaration and the sincere desire to establish a new contract between the public and the state repeatedly encountered various political and vectorial obstacles.
Ash is a figure very different from Gamzo, both in terms of his quiet temperament and because in the past he was not known to the public and hardly spoke on national issues. He is unlikely to threaten any politician or suspect his own political ambitions. Fire is also common among the top of the Ministry of Health. His military past as chief medical officer may help him liaise with the IDF in managing the epidemic.
