Despite the economic crisis: 55 thousand businesses were opened between March and September

Posted on Oct 25, 2020 by Ifi Reporter

Despite the economic crisis, it turns out that in March to September 2020, 55,031 new businesses were opened in Israel. For comparison, in March to September 2019 (pre-Corona crisis), 71,873 new businesses were opened in VAT offices. Although this is a decrease of 23.4%, at the same time it is a significant number of businesses that opened despite the crisis.
The Tax Authority estimates that this is the opening of businesses in industries with rising activity during the Corona period, such as businesses in the courier and trucking industry, as well as small businesses that work from home. Advocate Tali Yaron-Eldar, a partner in the firm of Yaron-Eldar Fleur Schwartz & Co. and former income tax commissioner, says that although "there are fewer new cases being opened, because many think this is not the time to enter the market with a new business. However, there are many industries that continue to operate, and there are quite a few employees who have been fired and become self-employed and start businesses. "
Another interesting statistic is the fact that the amount of businesses closed in the corona months was low compared to last year. Data from the Tax Authority show that from January to June 2019, about 14,000 businesses were closed. In contrast, between January and June 2020, only 9,384 closed. Between May and August 2019, 21,535 VAT cases were closed. In contrast, between May and August 2020 (the peak of the corona period), only 18,780 were closed.
