Google will bring $ 1 billion to content sites in the next 3 years. The company's CEO, Pichai, announced the move, after senior news publishers around the world called on the company to pay them for using the content for more than a decade. Through these collaborations, Google is trying to promote its new news platform.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has said that the company he heads will pay publishers of the written and broadcast press, about $ 1 billion over the next three years, for using their content on a new platform it will promote in Brazil and Germany first.
"I have always valued quality journalism and I believe a vibrant news industry is critical to democratic functioning," Pichai wrote in his personal blog, where he announced the new initiative.
"The business model of newspapers, the one based on advertisements and subscriptions, has evolved over 100 years, with audiences going to other sources. The Internet is the latest change, but certainly not the last. We want to do our part and strengthen the press in the 21st century," he added.
The truth is, beautiful on his part. Apart from the fact of course that Google's harm to publishers is twofold. On the one hand, Google along with Facebook (FB) have taken over most of the online advertising market. Publishers, on the other hand, have to be present on these two platforms, the ones that most of the world are connected to via smartphones and computers. That is, they pay these two Goliaths to promote their content, even though surfers can be exposed to them for free at all through search.
For more than a decade, industry tycoons like Rupert Murdoch, owner of Newscorp and German media tycoon Axel Springer, have been calling on these companies to pay them for the content they display for free. Until now Google has refused. But Google also gets something in return.
The materials for which it pays will go to a new news platform that the company promotes called Google News Showcases. This platform is supposed to generate more money for Google and some of it is supposed to pass to publishers.
