Strong Demand for Mizrahi Tefahot's Latest Bond Offering Signals Confidence in Bank's Position

Posted on Dec 21, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

In a notable financial development on Wednesday night, institutional bodies demonstrated robust demand, injecting approximately NIS 4 billion into the market, with Bank Mizrahi Tefahot securing a substantial portion amounting to NIS 3 billion. This marks the second significant capital infusion into the banking system this week, following Bank Leumi's record-breaking request for over NIS 10 billion.

The surge in demand for Mizrahi Tefahot's issuance, as well as the notable interest in Bank Leumi's offering, reflects a collective recognition among investors that the trajectory of interest rates is on the verge of a change. The prevailing consensus suggests that the Bank of Israel's interest rates are poised to decrease soon, prompting institutions to secure favorable interest rates in the current market.

This strategic move is also driven by the fact that institutional bodies had amassed substantial cash reserves in October and November, significantly increasing the cash component of their portfolios. The resultant oversized volumes necessitated a proactive approach to deploy these funds effectively.

In the context of Mizrahi Tefahot's issuance, the magnitude of institutional interest prompted a competitive process reminiscent of a financial storm. When a bank seeks to raise funds, especially one of Mizrahi Tefahot's stature, the institutions clamor to transfer substantial amounts into the banking system. This dynamic was clearly evident in the events surrounding Mizrahi's IPO on the recent night.

Mizrahi Tefahot's CEO, Moshe Larry, emphasized that the heightened interest from institutional bodies underscores the immense confidence the bank enjoys in the capital market. Larry highlighted the bank's access to diverse, available, and relatively inexpensive sources of financing to meet its various needs.

Rosario Capital spearheaded the offering, executed through Mizrahi Tefahot Company for Issuances Ltd., solidifying Mizrahi Tefahot's position as a trusted player in the financial landscape. The successful bond offering not only addresses the bank's financial requirements but also serves as a barometer of the broader market sentiment and confidence in Mizrahi Tefahot's strategic positioning.
