Posted on Oct 9, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Ono Academic College, situated in Kirya, Israel, has fallen victim to a cyber attack, putting the privacy and security of its students at risk. The institution's management announced this alarming development, shedding light on the extent of the breach and the ongoing efforts to mitigate its consequences.

Approximately 250,000 records, including sensitive student information, were targeted in the attack, with the perpetrators yet to be identified. College officials were quick to respond, taking immediate steps to address the incident. In a statement released by the college, they said, "We have been working tirelessly in the last few hours to confront this incident and are in close coordination with the national cyber system. Simultaneously, we are keeping the Authority for the Protection of Privacy updated on our progress."

At this stage, the full scope and nature of the hacking remain uncertain, and an extensive investigation is currently underway to uncover more details about the breach.

To bolster the security of student information and prevent further compromises, the college has issued a series of recommendations to its community. These include changing passwords for email accounts, refraining from opening emails from unknown sources, and exercising caution when downloading files. Additionally, the college has cautioned that any files or publications appearing to be sent from Ono Academic College could potentially contain viruses and pose a risk to those who access them.

According to the institution, this cyber attack was part of a broader onslaught by a group of hackers targeting Israeli websites, likely connected to the ongoing regional conflicts. As cybersecurity experts delve deeper into the incident, it has become apparent that sensitive information has been leaked from the college's computer systems.

In response, Ono Academic College has assured its students and stakeholders that it is diligently working to contain the incident and recover the compromised data. The college remains in close contact with the National Cyber System and the Authority for the Protection of Privacy, collaborating to ensure that necessary safeguards are in place to prevent future attacks.

Although the situation is serious, Ono Academic College expects to fully restore its information systems in the coming days. In the meantime, they urge all members of their community to exercise vigilance and follow the recommended security measures to safeguard their personal information and protect against further cyber threats.
