The Jerusalem Municipality has approved three business complexes in East Jerusalem. The municipality, through the local planning and construction committee, this week approved the plan to build the business complex in Wadi Jouz, which was developed in a joint initiative with the Jerusalem and Heritage Ministry. In addition, the plan for the development of an employment area in the a-Tour neighborhood was approved for deposit, and the plan for the establishment of an employment and commercial complex in the Umm Tuba neighborhood was approved.
In the Wadi Jouz neighborhood, a plan for the regulation and development of the neighborhood was promoted, which divided the neighborhood into complexes. One of the complexes is the business complex, which is located on Wadi Jouz Street. The plan covers an area of about 80 dunams, which will reach up to the main street in Wadi Jouz, which is characterized by the construction of sheds and illegal construction, used for commerce, crafts and garages, and to the Hebrew University Boulevard to the north.
Wadi Jouz's plan is now receiving opposition from residents, who are worried about the consequences of the changes in their neighborhood. Bassem Ramlawi, a resident of Wadi Jouz and a business owner, said that "instead of building a compound that will give us building permits, there is a housing shortage and it is a pity to build a compound when they end up coming from outside Jerusalem to work and not the locals."
The plan in the a-Tour neighborhood is on the edge of the city's jurisdiction, with a direct connection to the Jerusalem-Dead Sea road, near the Olives Interchange. The area of the complex is about 45 dunams, which is held as privately owned land. The planning was accompanied by the process of involving the residents, in order to provide a correct solution for the widening and regulation of roads, the division of plots, and the granting of building rights.
The plan will include about 100,000 square meters for commercial, employment and industrial areas, with trade accompanying the main axes, and employment uses that may create environmental problems will be removed from the residential areas bordering the plan.
The plan to establish a business and services area in the Umm Tuba neighborhood was put on hold last year, due to opposition from Jewish residents from the nearby Har Homa neighborhood. This week, the plan for the construction of an employment and commercial complex was approved and it will include 11 employment plots with a construction volume of about 75,000 square meters. All this for varying uses of employment, light industry, crafts and commerce.
In addition to the employment purpose, the plan offers space for buildings and public institutions for urban uses, open and central public space in its northern part, scenic development along Nahal Darga Road, and offers trails and lanes to connect Umm Tuba to the employment area, also used for infrastructure and drainage.
The Minister of Construction and Housing, Jerusalem and Heritage, Zeev Elkin, stated that "the approval of the construction of the business complex in Wadi Jouz is good news for Jerusalem. "Jerusalem and the heritage under my leadership will continue to develop and promote Jerusalem for the benefit of all the city's residents."
The Mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Leon: "We invest in the development of employment areas throughout the city, including East Jerusalem. This is to enable many East Jerusalem residents diverse employment opportunities. We work to reduce gaps and provide opportunities for all city residents. United Jerusalem, East and West , In deeds ".
