Electric Bike and Scooter Theft on the Rise: 45% of Owners Have Experienced Theft

Posted on Jun 6, 2025 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Nearly half of electric bike and scooter owners in Israel have had their vehicles stolen at least once, according to a new nationwide survey conducted by Ituran in collaboration with the Geocartography Institute.

The survey, which polled a representative sample of bicycle and scooter owners, revealed that:

  • 28% had their vehicle stolen once

  • 11% experienced theft twice

  • 4% had their vehicle stolen three times

  • 2% reported having their vehicle stolen more than three times

In total, 45% of respondents reported experiencing at least one theft — highlighting a growing concern for micromobility users in Israel.

Older Riders Targeted More Frequently

The data shows that older riders are disproportionately affected. Among owners aged 55 and over, 37% had their vehicle stolen at least once. In contrast, only 27% of riders aged 18–34 reported a similar experience.

Geographically, the breakdown of reported thefts shows:

  • 31% in the Jerusalem area

  • 28% in Tel Aviv and Central Israel

  • 20% in the Sharon region

These figures suggest that urban areas — particularly those with heavy scooter and bike usage — are more vulnerable to theft.

A High-Tech Solution to Combat Theft

In response to the growing threat, Ituran has introduced TICK TRACK, a smart, Israeli-developed vehicle protection system for electric bikes, scooters, tricycles, and other light electric vehicles.

The TICK TRACK system is already installed in over 12,000 vehicles and offers users:

  • 24/7 real-time tracking via mobile app

  • Alerts for suspicious movement or shaking

  • Notifications when the vehicle starts moving or exits a defined zone

  • Other real-time alerts that may signal unauthorized activity

Advanced Enforcement and Recovery System

What sets Ituran’s solution apart is its integration with an exclusive national operations system, supported by:

  • A 24/7 monitoring and service center

  • A field enforcement team of 180 personnel, working in cooperation with Israeli security forces to track and recover stolen vehicles

Ituran's operational model, already proven in recovering stolen cars and motorcycles, now extends its capabilities to scooters and electric bicycles, responding directly to the needs of thousands of urban riders across the country.
