Shanghai ranking: Three Israeli institutions were ranked among the 100 best universities

Posted on Aug 16, 2024 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

The Israeli academy maintained its position in the Shanghai ranking, the world's most important university ranking. Three Israeli institutions were ranked among the 100 best universities in the world: the Weizmann Institute, the Hebrew University, and the Technion. The Weizmann Institute of Science leads the ranking among Israeli institutions and is ranked 69th (last year it was ranked 68th).
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem rose from 86th place to 81st place, while the Technion dropped from 79th place to 85th place. As a result, the Hebrew University and the Technion switched places. Also, the Technion was ranked 11th among technological universities in the world.
The Shanghai Ranking, which has been published since 2003, rates the level of research in the world's academic institutions according to various criteria, including the number of Nobel and Fields Prize winners among the institution's researchers and graduates, the number of scientific articles published in the leading journals Nature and Science, and other research performances. The ranking encompasses more than 2,500 universities and the publication presents the top 1,000.
One of the reasons for the good rankings of Israeli universities is the relatively large number of Israelis winning Nobel and Fields prizes. Another reason is that in recent years universities have begun to invest great efforts in order to rank, for example, publications in reputable journals. In the last two years, academics in Israel have suffered from incessant harassment by the government, especially the Minister of Education, Yoav Kish, but the ranking reflects indicators and processes that have been going on for many years.
The rankings of the other universities in Israel that are after the 101st place will be published later today. However, it is known that 3 of them are located between the 101st and 500th places (probably Tel Aviv, Ben Gurion and Bar Ilan) and another university (probably Haifa) is ranked after the 501st place.
The list of the five leading universities in the world is opened by Harvard, followed by Stanford, MIT, Cambridge and Berkeley. Among the top 100 institutions, 38 are from the USA, 14 from China, 8 from the UK, 5 from Australia, 4 from France, 4 from Germany, 3 from Canada and 3 from Israel.
