At a moving gathering marking the National Memorial Day of October 7, author Gideon Alon discussed his new book “Fierce Storm – A War Diary Since 07.10.23” and reunited with former Deputy Attorney General Yehudit Karp over a 40-year-old article.
A special and emotional event was held this week at Palace Tel Aviv, a leading assisted living residence, to mark the National Memorial Day of October 7.
Renowned writer and journalist Gideon Alon met with residents to discuss his latest book, “Fierce Storm – A War Diary Since 07.10.23”, which chronicles the war and its impact on Israeli society since the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.
During the event, a moving reunion took place between Alon and resident Yehudit Karp, Israel’s former Deputy Attorney General. Karp surprised Alon by presenting an article he had written 40 years ago in Haaretz—from the time when he served as the newspaper’s legal affairs correspondent. The rediscovered piece sparked a heartfelt exchange between the two about the evolution of Israeli law and public discourse over the decades.
Engaged Discussion with Residents
Following the conversation, Alon engaged with Palace Tel Aviv residents in a lively Q&A session, addressing questions about the current situation in Israel, the challenges of wartime journalism, and the moral dilemmas faced by the media during national crises.
Residents shared personal reflections on the events of October 7 and their hopes for the future, creating a meaningful and intergenerational dialogue.
A Tradition of Connection and Remembrance
Michal Hoderland, Director of Palace Tel Aviv, praised the event and the atmosphere it created:
“During our 20 years of activity, hundreds of inspiring and emotional meetings have taken place here between our residents and figures from Israeli culture, media, and public life. Today’s encounter with Gideon Alon was particularly powerful, connecting memory, history, and personal experience.”
The event concluded with a moment of silence in memory of the victims of October 7, followed by informal conversations between the author and residents.
