Elbit Systems is expected to manufacture 3,000 respirators developed by the Lifecan Medical startup next week in an effort to alleviate the shortage of respiratory machines for Corona patients. Elbit Systems' development and manufacturing capabilities have been mobilized by the Defense Ministry in an effort to produce a sufficient supply of respirators.
The company was recruited following the failure of the Ministry of Health to import respirators from Germany, China and the United States. Medical that is in short supply - especially in the US. Today, the health system has 3,000 respirators. This inventory may not suffice if the scenario is realized within 4-3 months that 5,000 Corona patients will be needed.
The Defense Ministry for Armed Forces and Technological Infrastructure Research (MPA) in the Ministry of Defense approached the aerospace industry, the Air Force and Elbit Systems and asked them to transfer to industrial production the prototype of respirators developed by Lifecan Medical, and Elbit Systems' proposal for a short-term process was selected. Lifecan Medical is designed to assist lung function in patients whose condition is not yet severe, thus releasing respirators to patients in a more severe condition.
Engineers at Elbit Systems, owned by Elbit Systems, have been able to develop a production line within two weeks that will produce 300 respirators by next week. They will then increase production rates to 500 respirators a week, producing 3,000 respirators by the end of May. The new production line, which will be based on an old production line used at IMI's Ramat Hasharon plant, will be based on components that Elbit Systems' logistics personnel will purchase abroad after a short process of locating several suppliers for each of the essential components.
Along with Elbit Systems' involvement in efforts to increase the availability of respirators, the two other major defense companies, the aerospace industry and Raphael, are engaged in similar efforts. Aerospace Industries manufactures, for the Ministry of Health, the ventilator machines of the Israeli company Invictic in its missile and satellite plant, and Raphael helps Plate Medical to manufacture advanced respirators designed for the serious condition of corona patients.
Lifecan ventilator machines will be manufactured in two production lines of electronic components at the IMI factory in Ramat Hasharon that were converted for this purpose. Production will be done by 120 employees in three shifts, each with 40 employees. Elbit Systems chose to thank its employees who participated in the accelerated effort to develop the production line for respirators by distributing 10,000 flowers purchased from Israeli farmers - to help Israeli agriculture cope with the sharp decline in demand.
