IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Amir Baram to Step Down at End of January

Posted on Jan 10, 2025 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

General Amir Baram, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), has announced his intention to step down from his position at the end of next month. In a letter addressed to Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Baram explained that the significant reduction in the intensity of the ongoing war, along with his belief that his ability to contribute in his current role had become "limited," were key factors in his decision to leave.

Baram: “Contribution is Limited”

In the letter, Baram noted that he had initially extended his tenure by six months at the request of Chief of Staff Halevi and in coordination with the Minister of Defense, given the intensified nature of the war at the time. "A few months ago, following your request and in coordination with the Minister of Defense, I extended my position for another six months because I believed it was appropriate and correct to comply with the request due to the intensified war," Baram wrote.

However, he expressed that in the current situation, with the decrease in the scope of military operations, he no longer felt he could contribute effectively in his current capacity. "In the current state of affairs, my contribution as Deputy Chief of Staff is limited, and I do not intend to serve as Deputy Chief of Staff for three or four full years (a double term)," Baram stated.

Continued Commitment to the IDF

Despite stepping down from his role as Deputy Chief of Staff, Baram emphasized his continued dedication to the defense establishment. He assured me that he would be willing to serve in any other position within the IDF or defense community, should he be called upon. "In the future, I would be ready to fill any position in the defense establishment that I am required to fill," he added.

Appreciation from Chief of Staff Halevi

The IDF acknowledged Baram’s request to end his tenure, with Chief of Staff Halevi expressing his appreciation for the Deputy Chief’s efforts throughout his service, especially during the recent conflict. According to an IDF statement, "The Chief of Staff and the Deputy discussed the matter, and the Chief of Staff expressed his appreciation for the deputy's important work during the war and in general."

The statement also indicated that Baram would continue to fulfill any other roles as needed, underscoring his ongoing value to the IDF. "The Deputy Chief of Staff will perform any role he is required or asked to perform," the IDF added.

Baram’s Career and Legacy

Baram, who has served as Deputy Chief of Staff for approximately two and a half years, will conclude his tenure after overseeing key aspects of military operations during a critical period for Israel. His extended term was influenced by the ongoing security challenges faced by the IDF, particularly in the context of heightened military engagements in recent months.

The decision to step down comes as the IDF transitions into a phase of reduced intensity in its military campaigns. Baram’s legacy will include his leadership and contributions during a time of heightened conflict, with his planned departure marking the end of an important chapter in his distinguished military career.
