approved: the construction of a desalination plant in the Western Galilee

The National Commission on National Infrastructure, headed by Zeev Bilsky, unanimously approved the plan for the construction of a desalination plant in the Western Galilee. The planning and approval process lasted about 22 months.
This is the seventh desalination facility the state is promoting. Today, there are five desalination plants in Israel: four private and one government owned by Mekorot. In addition, the Accountant-General is leading a tender to establish a sixth facility in Soreq.
The five existing facilities cover about 600 million cubic meters of water a year, which is about 75% of Israel's drinking water. Together with the two new facilities, which are expected to be built by 2025, the volume of water desalination in Israel is expected to be one billion cubic meters a year.
The facility will be erected in the Western Galilee, between Highway 4 and the railroad, and in two phases, each producing about 100 million cubic meters of water per year, and a total of 200 million cubic meters. The desalination facilities, due to the inability to cross the Carmel Range. The project was promoted a decade ago by the Water Authority and encountered barriers, including from the IDF, which had to evacuate from military camps.
Bielski said: "The construction of the desalination plant in the Western Galilee will enable the continued farming and development expected of population growth in the area."
