2918: 2.6 million residential apartments in Israel, most of them in cities
Posted on Aug 4, 2019 by Ifi Reporter
As of 2018, there were 2.6 million residential apartments in Israel, most of them in cities and local councils (about 2.4 million apartments), and the rest in regional councils (about 222,000 apartments). This is according to data from the number of apartments in Israel, which was published for the first time this morning by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
The city with the highest number of apartments is Jerusalem, with about 224,000 apartments in some 20,500 buildings, followed by Tel Aviv-Jaffa with about 206,000 apartments in about 18,400 buildings. These figures, according to the CBS, reflect the differences in the average number of persons living in an apartment between the two cities, as the population of the capital numbered about 919,000 residents this year - twice that of Tel Aviv-Jaffa (approximately 452,000).
Haifa is in third place, with approximately 119.7 thousand apartments in approximately 12.3 thousand buildings, and in fourth place Petah Tikva, with approximately 84,000 apartments in approximately 7,780 thousand buildings. Rishon Lezion is in fifth place with about 79,000 apartments in some 9,800,000 buildings, and Beersheba on Friday with about 77,000 apartments in about 11,500 buildings.
It was also found that from 2012 to 2018, there was a 12% increase in the number of new dwellings built in the cities and local councils, with the construction of some 255,000 apartments. The new city of Harish was the locality where the most significant increase in the number of dwellings built during this period was recorded - with the addition of about 2,700 apartments (10 times), followed by Beer Yaakov, with the addition of 2,900 apartments (1.7 times). In contrast, the localities with the smallest addition of apartments were Kochav Yair and Maale Ephraim, where only a few apartments were built during these years.
The data were taken from the Register of Residential Buildings and Buildings updated once a year and are based on municipal property tax data of 257 local authorities in Israel. They do not include unreported apartments, as well as apartments in cooperative settlements such as kibbutzim and cooperative settlements, which pay a communal property tax.
