The international Israeli model Bar Refaeli will pay tax in Israel on income of tens of millions of shekels abroad in 2009 and 2010. The Central District Court in Lod ruled that the civil tax appeals filed by the model were based on tax assessments issued by the Tax Authority.
Rafaeli intends to appeal the ruling and hired the services of attorney Pini Rubin, a leading tax expert and head of the Gornitzky firm, for the appeal.
The decision in the civil arena joins the decision of the State Attorney's Office for Taxation and Economics to criminalize Bar Refaeli and her parents Tzipi and Rafi Rafaeli, subject to a hearing, for tax offenses, in respect of the same income abroad.
The alleged tax evasion of Bar Refaeli revolves around allegations of tax evasion amounting to tens of millions of shekels and allegedly fraudulent model carried out by the model towards the state for four years, between 2009-2012. Investigation of the affair The Tel Aviv Tax Authority began an investigation by the Tax Authority.
The framework story for the suspicions against Rafaeli is that she was an Israeli model who broke Israel's borders and fostered an international model career. Around this framework, questions began to be raised regarding its revenues - amounting to tens of millions of shekels, and which country would enjoy the tax on them. This question goes through answering the preliminary question - where Bar Refaeli lived in those years. Rafaeli claimed that in 2007 she moved to the United States, in order to be close to her partner at the time, Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio and therefore not liable to tax in Israel. All the years in dispute actually lived in Israel - and therefore taxable in Israel.
The dispute over the model's residence split into two legal arenas. The first is the civilian arena - in which the state demands that Rafaeli be fined millions of shekels. The matter was discussed in the Lod District Court, which ruled last week and rejected Rafaeli's claims. The second arena is the criminal arena, in which Rafaeli will soon deal with the state's arguments during the hearing that will be held for her.
