Tikva Chadasha Party Chairman Gideon Sa'ar Resigns from Government Over War Cabinet Dispute

Posted on Mar 25, 2024 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Gideon Sa'ar, the chairman of the Tikva Chadasha party, announced his resignation from the government along with fellow party member Minister Yifat Shasha Biton on Monday evening. Sa'ar cited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's refusal to include him in the war cabinet and his inability to influence policy decisions regarding the ongoing conflict as primary reasons for his departure.

Speaking at the Zionist House of America in Tel Aviv, Sa'ar expressed dissatisfaction with the pace and direction of the military campaign, stating that it was not effectively advancing towards its goals. He criticized the decision to slow down military progress, which he believed prolonged the campaign and exacerbated the suffering of displaced civilians. Sa'ar emphasized the importance of acting swiftly to dismantle Hamas' military capabilities and criticized the perceived lack of leverage in negotiating a new hostage plan.

Sa'ar highlighted his efforts to advocate for a change in strategy within the political-security cabinet but lamented the lack of success in influencing policy decisions. He described the political-security cabinet as ineffective and excluded from crucial information discussed in the limited cabinet.

Two weeks prior to his resignation, Sa'ar had requested to join the war cabinet, emphasizing his extensive experience in government and his desire to contribute to decision-making. However, his offer was rejected, with Defense Minister Benny Gantz opposing the move. Negotiations regarding Sa'ar's inclusion in the war cabinet were reportedly complicated by demands from other political figures, notably Itamar Ben Gvir, chairman of Otzma Yehudit.

Sa'ar's departure from the government signals a significant rift within the coalition, with tensions rising over the handling of the ongoing conflict. Despite leaving the government, Sa'ar pledged to continue supporting efforts to achieve the goals of the war, prioritizing the interests of the country in political matters.

The dispute surrounding Sa'ar's resignation underscores broader challenges within the Israeli government regarding decision-making processes and coalition dynamics during times of crisis.
