The White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, said that the deputy head of the Hamas military wing, Marwan Issa, was killed in an Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip last week. In the attack, the IDF hit the tunnel where, according to intelligence information, Issa was staying, but so far no official confirmation has been received from an Israeli official that Issa was indeed killed in the attack.
After the attack on the Nuseirat camp in the center of the Gaza Strip, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said that the security system is still checking the results of the bombing and no verification has yet been received. Hagari emphasized that according to the intelligence in the area that was attacked, there were no Israeli hostages. According to the army, the tunnel in which Issa was was used as a hiding place for another senior official In Hamas, Razi Abu Tama, who was previously the commander of the organization's central camp area, and is currently responsible for the means of warfare.
Issa is number three in the organization, the deputy of Muhammad Daf, and together with Abu Tama, the two are considered to be the link between the political and military ranks in Hamas. He himself is considered a shadow man and a very dominant figure in the military and political formation of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, and was even a partner in the Shalit deal in 2011, under which 1,027 Palestinian prisoners were released from Israeli prisons in exchange for the kidnapped soldier.
Issa was born in 1965 in the al-Boreij refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, and in his youth he joined the Muslim Brotherhood and worked in the service of the movement. In 1987 he was arrested for the first time for his activities in Hamas during the first intifada, and was released a few years later. In 1997 he was arrested by the Palestinian Authority and released after the start of the second intifada in 2000. In the 1990s he was involved in carrying out suicide attacks, following the assassination of Yahya Ayesh in 1996.
In Gaza, Issa is credited with a central role in upgrading the activities of the al-Qassam Brigades, the military arm of Hamas, from gatherings to activities similar to that of a regular army with an orderly hierarchy. The organization avoided mentioning his name until 2005 when a list of Hamas commanders was published on the eve of the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Issa was saved several times in the past from assassination attempts, including in 2006, 2014 and 2021. He was not seen in public until 2011, when his photo was published alongside Saleh al-Arouri and Ahmed al-Jabri, at a reception for prisoners who returned to Gaza in the Shalit deal.
