Lufthansa Cancels Night Flights to Israel Amid Security Concerns
Posted on Jul 30, 2024 by Ifi Reporter
In response to heightened vigilance in northern Israel following the massacre in Majdal Shams, where 12 children and teenagers were killed and dozens injured, the German airline group Lufthansa has canceled its night flights from Munich and Frankfurt to Ben Gurion Airport for the next two days. This decision also affects Swiss and Austrian Airlines, which are part of the Lufthansa group.
Lufthansa cited "operational reasons" for the cancellations. Industry experts suggest the decision was influenced by the refusal of the company's staff to remain in Israel due to the escalating security situation, particularly in light of ongoing conflict in the north. Additionally, Lufthansa has suspended operations at Beirut's airport until August 5.
Broader Impact on Air Travel
Currently, only about 50 foreign airlines continue to operate in Israel, as many have suspended flights due to the ongoing war and unstable security conditions. Among the airlines that have ceased flights to Israel are British low-cost carrier EasyJet, Royal Jordanian, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, KLM, and Air Canada.
Industry Response
The aviation industry remains on high alert as the security situation in Israel and Lebanon continues to evolve. The decision by Lufthansa and its affiliates reflects a broader trend of airlines adjusting their operations to ensure the safety of their staff and passengers amid rising regional tensions.
