Israeli Air Travel Sees Dramatic 41% Drop at Ben Gurion airport Amidst Recent Conflict

Posted on Nov 14, 2023 by Ifi Reporter - Dan Bielski

Israel's international air travel sector witnessed a substantial 41% decline in passenger numbers during October, as reported by the Airports Authority. This stark decrease is in comparison to the same period last year, reflecting the profound impact of the war on the nation's aviation industry.

Notably, throughout last month, there were ten days when foreign airlines continued operations to and from Israel, unaware of the full extent of the conflict. Additionally, the month saw a significant number of Israelis either returning home or leaving the country due to the unfolding events.

According to the Airports Authority's data, approximately 1.17 million passengers on international flights passed through Israel in October, down from the 1.99 million recorded in the same month the previous year. El Al emerged as the primary beneficiary, securing the top spot in passenger numbers with an impressive 19.5% increase compared to October last year, totaling nearly two million passengers.

Other leading positions were also dominated by Israeli carriers in light of the war's impact. Israir claimed the second spot with over 86 thousand passengers, representing a 7.3% decline from the previous year. Arkia secured the third position, with almost 57 thousand passengers, experiencing a 32.5% reduction compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, various foreign airlines announced the continuation of their flight suspensions to Israel. KLM plans to resume flights on December 17, subject to change. Delta Airlines has extended its suspension until the end of the month, pending further updates, while Lufthansa anticipates a return to Israel on December 14, also subject to change.

The data underscores the far-reaching consequences of the conflict on Israel's aviation industry, with both local and international carriers navigating the challenges posed by the evolving situation.
